TOPIC: “What Communism was Like Living in Cuba”
SPEAKER: Charmaine Vance
This picture shows Charmaine and her father, Commander Robert C. Vance, when she took him on a veteran’s honor flight to Wash. D.C. in Sept. 2019. He passed away four years later in Sept. 2023 at age 99.
About our Speaker: Charmaine was a teenager when her father was a Navy officer at Guantanamo Bay on the south end of Cuba. She learned much from watching Cuban Television and the Cuban news. She also learned from the people who risked their lives to escape from Cuba and would make it to the naval base, either swimming or hiding by night in a boat being pushed in the water by someone else. They told what Cuba was really like - the hunger and poverty and lack of freedom with the ruthless dictator Castro. Many people who tried to flee didn’t make it; they were shot in the water by Cuban guards. Charmaine will answer the following questions:

What methods do the communist leaders use to keep their “subjects” in control?

How are they rewarded for spying and reporting on their neighbors – even their own parents?

What did they do to indoctrinate the children into believing Castro was like a God?
